Case study 1

Building a Descendant Engagement Model for a Historic Site

Client

Menokin Foundation and the Menokin Descendants Collective

Challenge

Historic sites across the United States are increasingly recognizing the importance of engaging descendants of enslaved communities connected to their landscapes. Many institutions, however, lack clear frameworks for building meaningful and sustainable relationships with descendant communities.

Menokin sought to deepen its descendant engagement efforts while ensuring that descendant voices remained central to the interpretation, programming, and future development of the site.

Strategy

Monday, Wednesday, Tuesday Strategies partnered with Menokin leadership and descendant stakeholders to support the development of a descendant-centered engagement framework. The work focused on aligning community engagement, storytelling initiatives, and institutional strategy in ways that respected both historical complexity and living descendant relationships.

The approach emphasized collaboration, long-term relationship building, and the integration of descendant perspectives into programming and public interpretation.

Key Deliverables

  • Strategic guidance on descendant engagement initiatives

  • Development of descendant-centered programming concepts

  • Collaboration with descendant leadership on community initiatives

  • Support for storytelling and historical interpretation projects

  • Advisory support for institutional communications and engagement strategy

Impact

The engagement framework strengthened connections between the historic site and the descendant community while helping position the organization as a national example of descendant-centered historic interpretation. The work also laid the foundation for expanded programming, storytelling initiatives, and collaborative projects.
