As the year comes to a close, I’ve been thinking less about what got done and more about what clarified.

This year reminded me that meaningful work rarely moves in straight lines. It deepens, stretches, and asks us to slow down long enough to listen to what’s being revealed.

In October, I found myself at a historic site in Virginia during its first community-centered fall festival. Families gathered. Children carved pumpkins. Local schools participated. Volunteers showed up in force. It was joyful and deeply human. What stayed with me was watching what happens when history, place, and community are treated as living rather than static. That kind of work takes care, intention, and stamina.

Earlier in the fall, I attended the Descendants of Enslaved Communities Symposium in Charlottesville, Virginia, where descendants gathered under the theme Lift Every Voice. Hearing testimonies, sitting with shared history, and witnessing the emotional weight carried by those whose stories are still so close to the surface was grounding. It reinforced something I believe deeply: our shared history is not distant. It remains.

In October, I also traveled to Charleston, South Carolina, for the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society conference, with a visit to the International African American Museum as part of the experience. Standing in spaces designed to tell our stories with dignity and truth was both invigorating and affirming.

These moments reminded me why preservation, interpretation, and stewardship matter so much, especially now.

Behind the scenes, much of this year has been spent supporting organizations as they prepare to launch, helping teams think through funding readiness, and refining the tools I use to assess organizational alignment when legacy is involved. I have been building quietly, with more clarity about what mission-driven organizations need when they are carrying real responsibility to communities and history.

Across public spaces, private conversations, and the work happening behind the scenes, one throughline kept surfacing:

When legacy is involved, strategy is never just technical. It is relational. It is ethical. And often, it is sacred.

As we head into the new year, I’ll be sharing more tools and resources. January will mark the next chapter of Monday, Wednesday, Tuesday Strategies, shaped by what this year helped clarify.
